The aim of the updated regulation was to shorten and simplify the registration procedure, increase the protection of geographical indications as ingredients and online, recognize sustainable practices and strengthen producer groups. An important change for companies that do not produce products with protected designations themselves, are new rules that apply to emphasize that an ingredient with a protected designation is part of a composite product. For example, if you want to enter the name of an ingredient with a protected designation in the name of a composite product, and there is a recognized producer group, this producer group must first give their permission for use. (Does not apply to alcoholic beverages). But the Swedish Food Agency has recently released a news that it is not yet possible to make such a notification since a system for recognized producer groups is missing. Another important change is that the protection of geographical indications now also includes domain names. It is therefore required that the company has permission to use the protected designation. After 14 May 2026, agricultural products and spirits must be labeled so that the geographical indication and the producer's name are indicated in the same field of vision. Don't miss Märkningsdagen (seminar on food labeling) on December 5, when the Swedish Food Agency will come and talk more about this specific topic!
